Letter from the Athletic Director

While the situation with the virus remains fluid, Gonzaga continues to prepare for our return to school under the hybrid format outlined in earlier communications from the Headmaster and COO's office. As was mentioned in those emails, the full return to school plan -- should it remain feasible and viable -- will be communicated to students and parents during the first week of August.

I wanted to write on two important topics related to athletics:

First, the decision has been made by Gonzaga and the WCAC not to participate in any athletic competition this fall. Plans are being developed that -- should conditions allow -- would provide for all three sports seasons to take place during the second semester, starting in early 2021. While we will share those plans at a later date, again, there will be no tryouts, traditional practices or competition until further notice.

We will be doing conditioning, team specific workouts, drills and other athletic activity with the students when we return to school in late August. While those will subject to restrictions inherent to the cohort and hybrid model that will accompany the start of school, know that we're committed to creating opportunities whenever and however we can to keep the guys moving and active despite the circumstances we continue to find ourselves in.

Second, I want to reiterate the importance of parents and students following the school's lead on limiting participation in athletic competition during the summer months. Especially in these final weeks as we plan to return to Eye Street, it is critical that students not engage in athletic competition, sports-related travel, or training that runs against the prevailing guidance that is out there. The school's plan will address this topic when it is released, but as Athletic Director I want to reinforce the importance of not doing anything in August that will jeopardize your own ability to return to school -- or the school's ability to successfully navigate reopening -- because of risky behavior in non-school sports.

Until then, please stay safe and let me know if you have any questions.
