Coach Waller began coaching at Gonzaga in 1998 and became Head Varsity Coach in 2005. In his tenure, Coach Waller’s teams have advanced to the WCAC Finals 14 times, winning seven WCAC Championships. In 2007 and 2019, he was honored as The Washington Post All-Met Coach of the Year and was named WCAC Coach of the Year in 2015 and 2017. Coach Waller has twice been named NHFS Mideast Region Coach of the year. Over the years, Gonzaga’s Varsity team has been a constant in the national spotlight, with the 2009 and 2012 teams both ranked in the top ten in the nation by the United Soccer coaches’ poll. Scott has coached seven Gatorade State Player of the Year recipients, ten first-team Washington Post All-Met players, and has an impressive varsity winning record of 240-84-45.
Scott was a standout player at Castleton State College in Vermont and earned two Academic All-American Honors, NESCA Senior All-Star, and All-Conference First Team selections in his sophomore, junior, and senior years. Scott lives in the Del Ray area of Alexandria with his wife, Suzy, and their three children: Kira (16), Charlie (14), and Naomi (10).
Assistant and Volunteer Coaches
Adrian Oryshkevych ’99, Assistant Varsity Coach
Coach Oryshkevych is a 1999 graduate of Gonzaga and was a two-year Varsity soccer player under Coach Don Smith. He went on to Fordham University to study history and graduated with a B.A./M.A. in 2004. Coach Oryshkevych spent the next 10 years teaching in New York City and Saint Peter’s Prep in Jersey City, NJ, where he coached the JV team for eight years. He returned to Gonzaga in 2014 to teach in the History Department and coach the JV team; he also assists Coach Waller on the Varsity squad.
Mike Formant '13, Assistant Varsity Coach
Mike Formant is a 2013 graduate of Gonzaga and was a member of the 2012 WCAC Championship team. He went on to win an NCAA DII National Championship with Lynn University in 2014. A two-sport athlete, Mike also played on the Lynn's Men's Lacrosse team. He completed his bachelor's degree of Business Entrepreneurship in three years while graduating Magna Cum Laude. Before returning to assist Coach Waller and the Varsity squad, Mike played one season for Hobart Zebras F.C. of the Australian National Premier Leagues-Tasmania. He is proud to be back on Eye Street!
John Gardner, Assistant Varsity Coach
Coach Gardner is a 2009 graduate of Jesuit College Prep in Dallas, Texas. After graduation he went on to earn his bachelor’s degree in Global Affairs and play NCAA Division I soccer at George Mason University before heading overseas to play in England and Ireland.
Upon his return, he earned a Masters in Global and International Education from Drexel University in Philadelphia.
Coach Gardner comes to Eye Street from Strake Jesuit College Prep, in Houston, Texas, where he spent the last 5 years coaching the JV team and serving as assistant Varsity coach. He is excited to continue his teaching and coaching career on Eye Street.
Jonathan Ruano, Junior Varsity Coach
Jonathan is a 2007 graduate of St. John’s in DC where he was part of the Varsity program for 3 years. After graduation, Jonathan attended and played on the University of Delaware’s club team before transferring to John Carroll University after a year.
He eventually came back to the area, joining the Gonzaga Campus Ministry office and soccer staff in 2016. Currently, Jonathan serves as Assistant Dean of Students as well as the Latin American Student Organization moderator. Soccer has always been a passion throughout his life and it counties to be. The last seven years the mission has been one: preparing players to be successful at the varsity level and off the pitch.

Kevin Tarpy, Head Freshman Coach
Coach Tarpey is from the suburbs of Philadelphia (Drexel Hill, PA). This is his forth year at Gonzaga as a full time mathematics teacher, and soccer and baseball coach. Before coming to Gonzaga he coached at his alma mater Monsignor Bonner.
Coach Tarpey graduated with a B.S. in Human Development & Family Studies from Penn State University, followed by a M.A. in Secondary Math Education from Cabrini University.
Marshall Marks '14, Assistant Freshman Coach
Coach Marks is from Silver Spring, MD. He graduated from Xavier University in 2018 with a B.S. in Sports Management & double minored in Business & Finance. Before coming to Gonzaga, Coach Marks worked at Okta and the Washington Commanders.
Coach Marks serves as the Assistant Athletic Director at Gonzaga. This will be Coach Marks third year at Gonzaga and second year coaching.
