Hockey Wins A and AA MAPHL Championships

Gonzaga Hockey finished the season on a high note with both the V1 Eagles and V2 Eagles capturing their respective MAPHL Championships. Both games were played on Monday, February 26 at The Gardens Ice House in Laurel, MD.

The V2 Eagles were up first, and dominated St. Stephen St. Agnes 7-2 to win the MAPHL A title for the sixth time in school history and third consecutive year. Jackson Brown scored the first and last goals on the night, while Tommy Clapton led the way on the night with a goal and three assists.

In the second game of the doubleheader, the V1 Eagles looked to avenge their WCAC loss to St. John's and did so in impressive fashion to capture the coveted MAPHL AA title by the score of 7-3.

“It feels amazing,” Gonzaga captain Danny Rogers '24 told the Washington Post. Lucas Abrantes '25, who scored the game winner in the second period said, “After WCAC, we knew that we had another chance to get them. So we just were all locked in, and we just treated every game as like a step on the stairs to get up to this game. This game was the real championship.”  Between the two league schedules and playoffs, the game was the sixth time for the Eagles facing the Cadets this season. We were 2-3-1 in the series heading into the game, but Coach Sennott had the Eagles well prepared and confident to take home the championship.

In addition to his go-ahead goal, Abrante scored a second goal while Matthew Shay '25 scored two goals as well to go along with his two assists. Captain Hunter Oglesby '24 got the Eagles started by finding the net early in the first period, and Byers Hartman '24 and Jack Gardner '25 rounded out the scoring by each scoring a goal in the third period. Goalie Tucker Forrest '24 had 42 saves in the net. This is the the tenth title in program history.

Congratulations to all on a great season!
