Football Beats Calvert Hall, Travels to New York

Football improved to 2-0 on the season with a strong 26-0 win over Calvert Hall on September 1 on Buchanan Field. The student section was packed as they watched the Eagles jump out to a 7-0 lead behind a 30 yard touchdown run by Cody Hobson '24. On the very next play from scrimmage, Gonzaga got the ball back with a fumble recovery by David Fred '25. Penalties kept the Gonzaga's offense from scoring on the ensuing drive, but the defense came up with another takeaway on Calvert Hall's next possession with an interception by Tyson Harley '26. Harley's return set up a short field for the Eagles, and John Holley '25 connected on a 36 yard field goal to end the first quarter. With neither team scoring in the second quarter, Gonzaga led 10-0 at halftime.

The third quarter saw long drives by both teams, but ultimately only Gonzaga's Kai Hobson '24 found the endzone on a one-yard run to increase the Eagle lead to 17-0. In the fourth quarter, the Eagles sealed the win with a two consecutive passes to from Aidan Conrath '24 to Lincoln Fisher '25 - the first was a 35 yard gain and the second was a 25 yard touchdown. Holley's PAT was no good, but he would add a 35 yard field goal later in the quarter to make the final score 26-0. The best defensive performances came from captains David McMorris '24 and Daniel Holmes '24. McMorris had 5 tackles (3 for loss) and 2.5 sacks, and was named WCAC DC Touchdown Club Player of the Week. Cody Hobson '24 led the way offensively and Tommy Kemp '25 did a great job in his roles on special teams all night.
