Football Beats Carroll to Open 2023 Season

Gonzaga Football opened the 135th season on the road at Archbishop Carroll on Saturday, August 26. The Eagles are dedicating the 2023 season to the loving memory of Joe Reyda '85, who passed away suddenly this summer. Head Coach Randy Trivers enters his 10th season as the leader of the program.

The team jumped out to a 14-0 lead by the end of the first quarter. Linebacker Kedrick Golston II '26 intercepted a Lion pass and returned it inside the 10 yard line to set up a 1 yard touchdown run by quarterback and captain Aidan Conrath '24. On the second Eagle offensive possession, on 4th down and 7, Conrath found wide receiver Samuel Terry, Jr. '25 for a 26 yard touchdown.

"Gonzaga, looking to rejoin area’s elite, thumps Carroll to begin season" was the headline by the Washington Post as the second quarter saw more dominance by the Eagles. Wide receiver and captain Darius Wise, Jr. '24 caught two touchdowns in the quarter and defensive back Kainoa Winston '25 scored on a one yard run to give the Eagles a 35-0 lead at the break. Tight end Connall Brannan '24 had a strong performance on offense while defensive lineman and captain David McMorris '24 led the way on defense. Kicker John Holley '25 executed well in the kicking game.
