Father James Conn, S.J. to Serve as Commencement Speaker

Gonzaga is honored to announce that Father James Conn, S.J., an expert on Canon Law as well as a former teacher here on Eye Street, will deliver the Kohlmann Address at the graduation ceremony for the Gonzaga Class of 2022 on Sunday, June 5.

Father Conn is a native of Philadelphia, and since 1974 has been a priest of the Maryland (since
2020 USA East) Province of the Society of Jesus.  He is currently Professor Emeritus of Canon Law at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome and Superior of the Casa Santa Maria, the residence for
postgraduate student-priests of Rome’s Pontifical North American College. After serving for 12 years as
Ordinary Professor of Canon Law at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, where he earned his
doctorate, Father Conn was named Professor of the Practice of Canon Law at the School of Theology and Ministry at Boston College and St. John’s Seminary, Brighton MA.  He is a consultor of the Holy See’s Congregation for the Clergy and Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples. 

Prior to his assignments in Rome he was a teacher and administrator at several Jesuit secondary schools and universities in the United States -- including at Gonzaga, where he served as a Latin teacher, Assistant Dean of Studies, and Board Member. He was also head of the ecclesiastical faculty of theology at St. Mary’s Seminary and University in Baltimore and dean of its School of Theology.  He serves as a canonical advisor to episcopal conferences, diocesan bishops, and institutes of consecrated life. 

A graduate of Fordham Law School, he has been a member of the Bar in Maryland and the District of Columbia. His teaching career began in 1971 at Gonzaga. He is currently in his 51st year as a teacher of Latin.
