Football Beats McDonogh, Will Face Ryken at Home

The varsity football Eagles went on the road on Friday, September 3 to defeat Baltimore power the McDonogh School in a hard-fought game. McDonogh, also known as the Eagles, led the Eagles from Eye Street 7-0 at halftime, but a strong second half from Gonzaga proved that purple Eagles fly highest as Coach Trivers's team came away with a 23-7 win.

The Gonzaga defense was led once again by senior captain and linebacker Kadari Machen who made a number of key tackles to stop McDonogh drives inside Eagle territory. Quarterback Carson Petitbon '23 connected with junior receivers Brendan Lee and Jalen McDonald for second half touchdowns. Defensive back Gavin Bryson '22 played extremely well in coverage and also blocked a late field goal attempt to help secure the victory. Offensively, lineman Cameron Wilson '22 led the effort up front to pave the way for senior running back Joseph Hammond, Jr. all night. Hammond scored the final points of the game on 33 yard touchdown. On special teams, kicker James Miller '22 connected on a 31 yard field goal and linebacker Markeith Hogan '23 turned in a solid performance.

Here is a video recap from ABC-7 reporter Chad Ricardo:

Next up for the Eagles is a showdown with St. Mary's Ryken on Friday, September 10 at 6:30 PM on Buchanan Field to kickoff Reunion Weekend. If you can't make it to Eye Street, you can watch the game live by clicking here.
