Campus Ministry Continues its Faith in Action Programs

At the beginning of the school year, Campus Ministry launched a series called Faith in Action, which provides students with virtual opportunities to engage in meaningful service and justice work in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. Over the past few weeks, several of these programs have brought students and faculty together to reflect and pray.

On Monday, November 16, Campus Ministry co-hosted a Jesuit Martyrs Faith Justice Prayer Service along with Georgetown Prep, Loyola Blakefield, and Cristo Rey Jesuit in Baltimore. Over 80 students and faculty from the four Jesuit schools came together virtually to memorialize the Jesuits assassinated in 1989 in El Salvador during that country's civil war. The students had an opportunity to learn about these Jesuits and the lay women who were also assassinated. They asked themselves whether they could imagine putting themselves at risk for our faith and the good of others. “The conversation and prayer reflected how our community's ideals are shared throughout the Jesuit School Network,” says Dr. Stephen Szolosi, Gonzaga’s Director of Campus Ministry.

The following day, Assistant Campus Minister Ms. Maddie Davin led a prayer service to kick off Gonzaga's Adopt a Family program for this year, which takes place every Advent season in partnership with the Gonzaga Mothers Club. During the prayer service, a handful of students offered reflections on how their mothers serve as role models for humble generosity in their lives.

On Thursday, November 19, Nazareth Farm, one of Gonzaga's senior summer service sites, offered a virtual presentation on Living a Simpler Lifestyle as a way to answer the call to Care for Creation. They talked specifically about ways for our community to consider our carbon footprint and in particular our use of water.

Thank you to all the students and faculty who joined in these programs, which serve as a wonderful reminder to center prayer, reflection, and gratitude as we enter Thanksgiving week and the season of Advent.
