Fathers Club Hosts 31st DC Classic, Eagles Win Championship

The Gonzaga Fathers Club hosted the 31st Annual D.C. Classic last weekend in the Carmody Center. The event was a great success with four teams from out of the area and four local teams, including the host varsity Eagles, making up the tournament field.

The motto of the tournament is Great Basketball Suporting Good Works, as all proceeds support service projects for Gonzaga students. "We rededicate ourselves to the ideals that drove Michael Kelleher to establish the tournament in 1989 and which strive to embody the Jesuit motto of being Men for Others," says tournament co-chair Brian Coll (P '13 and '20).

With that mission in mind, the GFC hosted all of the teams for a Saturday morning breakfast
with guest speaker Mike Welch, who works at the Red Cloud Indian School on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. Every summer, Gonzaga's Campus Minstry department organizes a summer immersion trip to Pine Ridge.

Also in the line with the greater mission of the tournament, three awards were presented at halftime of the Championship Game.
  • The Michael Kelleher Scholar Athlete Award was awarded to Augie Sommers '20 for excelling in academics, sports and service and, as such, exemplifies the spirit of “men for others” that is so much a part of Gonzaga.
  • The John McLaughlin Award was presented to Al Washington and Rick Johnston for years of volunteer service to the DC Classic.
  • The Pedro Arrupe, S.J. Service Award was awarded to Fr. Joe Lingan '75 who has lived his life in service to others and, in the eyes of the DC Classic committee, meets the standards of Being a “Man for Others."
On the court, three days of exciting action took place with our Eagles playing tough to take home the title. The team beat Gonzaga Prep (WA) 83-50, Knoxville Catholic (TN) 67-61, and St. Stephen's St. Agnes (VA) 69-63. Senior captain Terrance Williams took home MVP honors.
