Rugby Racks Up Wins Against DeMatha and Landon, Sets Sights on Xavier

Gonzaga’s Varsity Purple Rugby team is coming off of a big week. On Monday, April 30, the team defeated DeMatha 62-19 on senior day. Two days later, on Thursday, May 3, the Eagles trounced Landon 61-10 in the MAVRC Semifinal round, advancing them to the MAVRC Championship game on Friday, May 11 versus Good Counsel. The game will be played on Buchanan Field at 6 PM.

But before that match-up, the team has an even more important game against Xavier High School from New York. The game, which will take place this Sunday, May 6 at 3 PM on Buchanan Field, represents high school rugby’s biggest east coast rivalry. Gonzaga is currently ranked number two in the nation, while Xaiver, the oldest high school rugby program in the country, is ranked fifth nationally. At stake are seedings for the National High School Rugby Championship tournament in Kansas City, Missouri, on May 17-19.

We hope you enjoy these great photos from the two wins this week.

Go Eagles!
