Soccer Wins Jesuit Classic Tournament

This past weekend the Varsity Soccer team traveled to Kansas City, MO, to compete in the 20th Jesuit Soccer Classic hosted by Rockhurst High School. The Classic started initially as a match between Rockhurst and Marquette University High School in Milwaukee, WI, and over the years expanded to include Gonzaga and Regis Jesuit from Denver, CO.

The Classic gives the students-athletes, coaches, and families the opportunity to get to know other Jesuit communities from around the country. In addition to playing matches, the athletes attend Mass together and stay with families from the host school. “Next year, it will be our turn to host the Jesuit Classic and planning has already begun for the event,” says Assistant Soccer Coach Adrian Oryshkevych.

This year, Gonzaga won the Classic for the first time since 2013. The team defeated Regis Jesuit on Friday 7-3 and Marquette 3-0 on Saturday. Senior Rhys Owen scored three goals and was named the MVP of the weekend. Seniors Ryan Teuschl, Jack Boland, and Goalkeeper Nick Gerlach anchored the defense.

“In the end, it was a team effort,” says Coach Oryshkevych. “Now we look forward to bringing that same effort to the rest of our games this season.”
