Football Shuts Out Oscar Smith in Season Opener

In a much anticipated season opening matchup against the defending Virginia 6A State Champions Oscar Smith, Gonzaga's varsity football team came away with a 17-0 victory in front of a packed crowd on August 29.

The Eagles jumped out to an early lead after Grady Sullivan '27 blocked a Tiger punt and quarterback Jason Lindsay '27 scored on a 1-yard run. In the second quarter, defensive tackle Rocco Williams '26 intercepted a tipped screen pass by defensive end Carter Meadows '26. The offense capitalized on the sudden change by driving 57 yards to reach the end zone for the second time behind a 2-yard touchdown run from Jago Woodards '27. After taking the 14-0 lead into halftime, the Eagles finished the scoring with a 39 yard field goal from Quinn Maguire '28 late in the fourth quarter. Defensive backs Derien Terry '26 and Walker Littleton '26 each had one interception on the night to help preserve the Eagle shutout. Click here to see all of the Eagles of the Week.
