Basketball Wins 33rd Annual DC Classic

On December 9-11, Gonzaga hosted the annual DC Classic -- a three day, 12 game tournament. This year's tournament featured teams from the DMV, Chicago, New York, and Pennsylvania in what made for another high level competition. The tournament, hosted by the Gonzaga Fathers Club (GFC), is 33 years old and the tagline for the event is "Good Basketball Supporting Great Works" because proceeds directly support Gonzaga's service projects for the current school year. Additionally, three awards are presented each year by the GFC -- here are this year's award winners:
  • The Mike Kelleher Scholar Award: Stefan Gately '23
  • The Pedro Arrupe Service Award: Matt Gannon '18
  • The John McLaughlin Gonzaga DC Classic Award: Al Jackson (P '15, P'13)

The Eagles started off their action in the tournament with a dominant 87-49 win over Friendship Tech from Washington D.C. on Friday.

On Saturday, Gonzaga faced a tough St. Raymond's team out of New York. Trailing 63-55 heading into the fourth quarter, the Eagles slowly chipped away at the lead. Nyk Lewis '25 tied the game at 72 with a floater in the lane with about two minutes left. After a big defensive stop, Derek Dixon '25 went two-for-two from the line to provide a 74-72 lead. Gonzaga did not look back and defeated St. Raymond 78-73.

On Sunday, Gonzaga faced Jackson-Reed for the DC Classic Championship. Gonzaga and Jackson-Reed traded buckets the entire game in a highly contested game. Gonzaga prevailed 64-58 to keep the title on Eye Street once again. Gonzaga has won back to back DC Classic Championships.

"I feel like our guys grew up a little this weekend," said Coach Turner about the team's performance in the DC Classic. "We have a group that is growing together each day. Playing against great competition will show you who you are, or can become, and our guys showed up as a team when it mattered the most. I was very proud of our effort but we still have room for improvement. We want to be at our best in late February, but this is a good start."

Go Eagles!
