Coach Turner Wins Wooden Legacy Award
The Wooden Legacy Award is given out annually to one boys and one girls high school basketball coach in each state. Named after John R. Wooden, a nationally-known American basketball player and coach, the 2021 award was recently given to Gonzaga Head Coach Steve Turner.
According to the National High School Basketball Coaches Association, the recognition seeks to honor basketball coaches around the country who are educators and have achieved excellence on the floor, in the classroom, and in the community that further embody the characteristics and legacy of Coach John Wooden.
“It’s an unbelievable honor to receive an award named for arguably the best coach to ever coach the game, at any level,” said Coach Turner. “I am humbled by it, truly blessed, and I know I wouldn't receive this award without having great assistant coaches as well as the great players who have played for me over the years.”
Coach Turner has spent 23 years coaching at Gonzaga (5 years as an assistant and 18 as a head coach) and has an all-time record of 398-142. The varsity basketball Eagles are off to a strong 2-0 start after winning the M.A.I.T championship last weekend. Next up, the Eagles will fly out to the Chicago Elite Classic where they will take on Whitney Young (IL) on Saturday, December 3rd.
