Soccer Beats The Heights and PVI

This week, the Varsity Soccer Eagles rebounded nicely from a tough draw with St. Mary's Ryken with a win against WCAC rival The Heights on Buchanan Field in front of a nice crowd. The game was a much anticipated one. The Heights beat Gonzaga in the 2018 WCAC Semifinal in route to winning the championship that year. The next year, Gonzaga returned the favor by beating The Heights in the 2019 WCAC Semifinal before defeating Good Counsel in the championship game.

On Tuesday, October 5 on Eye Street, Junior midfielder Colin Prendergast would score on a hustle play to put the Eagles up 1-0.  Right before half-time, the Cavaliers would score on a set-piece tying things up at 1 each. But halfway through the second half, The Heights fouled Junior forward Oliver Svenburg in the box which resulted in a penalty kick goal by Junior captain Andre Barrett. The Eagles went on to win the match 2-1.

On Thursday, October 7, the team followed up with another strong WCAC win against Paul VI in Chantilly, VA. Senior captain Aidan Rafferty would slot in the first goal off of a juicy rebound to put the Eagles up 1-0. In the second half, senior Simon Armstrong redirected a cross from junior Brenden Pauline to put the Eagles up 2-0. PVI would add a goal of their own but sophomore Nick Ortiz would send a beautiful cross into the box to be one-timed in by Simon Armstrong again to put the Eagles up 3-1 and that is how it would end. Also, Stefan Gately played a great consistent match in the defensive end.

The Varsity Soccer Eagles will be in action next week against School without Walls on Tuesday, Carroll on Thursday night (Senior Night), and Friday night against Nichols (Buffalo, NY) -- all on Buchanan Field! Click here for the complete schedule and times.
