Gonzaga Golf played three championship matches in three days this week. On Tuesday, May 6, the Eagles won their 9th straight WCAC Championship. Senior Carson Looney won low medalist by defeating, for the second year in a row, Bishop O’Connell's top golfer at University of Maryland Golf Course. Entering the 18th green, Looney was ahead by one stroke, he knew his opponent's miss for birdie meant he just had to make a six-foot par putt for the win. Here's the match-clinching putt:
The team won the Championship with a score of 368. O'Connell finished in second with a total of 377. Looney shot a 68 (-3); Jack Kelley '28 and Jake Lopes '27 shot a 74 (+3); and Brendan Jacobs '27 and Matthew Delpizzo '26 shot a 76 (+5).
The following day, the team took 2nd place in the Metro Championship at PB Dye with a score of 380. Every Eagle golfer shot between 74 and 77, with Lopes shooting the 74. Georgetown Prep won the event with a score of 378, while Landon took 3rd with a score of 381, and O'Connell finished in 4th with a score of 389.
On Thursday, May 8, the team won its second straight DCSAA Championship with a team score of -5. St. John's finished 2nd with a final score of +7. Gonzaga finished with the top three individual scores of the tournament, with Looney winning the Low Medalist for a third straight year with a score of 67 (-5). Lopes finished in 2nd place with a 68 (-4) and Kelley finished tied for 3rd with a 70 (-2).
"[He came] into this season as returning
All-Met Player of the Year and still, with all that pressure, continued to play at a really high level," Head Coach Michael Hanagan '08 told the
Washington Post when asked about Looney's season. “He’s definitely made an impact that will extend beyond just his four years here.”
Congratulations to all! Hail Gonzaga!
