Gonzaga Community Celebrates the Start of Lent with Ash Wednesday Liturgy

On Wednesday, February 26, the Gonzaga community came together to celebrate the beginning of the Lenten season. Campus Ministry invited students and faculty to gather in the Carmody Center for a communal prayer from the Liturgy of the Hours and Rite for the Distribution of Ashes. Rev. Phil Ganir, SJ, who is studying catechesis at Catholic University, presided over the liturgy.

The ashes that were distributed were made from olive branches that were blessed from Palm Sunday of last year and the alms collected went to two mental health organizations central to the purpose of the Eagles Out of Darkness club: the True Sioux Hope Foundation and Active Minds Charity.

Students and faculty particpated in the service as altar servers, lectors, and presenters of original reflections. Here are some photos and a short video from Ash Wednesday:
