Hockey Rolls Past Spalding After Returning from Jesuit Cup

The V1 Hockey Eagles traveled to Chicago, IL over the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday weekend for the annual Jesuit Cup Tournament.  "I am proud of how the group that we brought out there did," said Coach Sammy Gerdano '10. "We were missing several key players and called up five V2 players to fill in, including sophomore goaltender Jonah Schlee who may have been the MVP of the weekend for us."

Three of the four Eagle opponents were ranked in the top 10 teams in the state of Illinois. The Eagles started the weekend with an exciting win over Benet Academy 6-4, but fell to St. Viator 2-1 in the night cap. The next day, the team lost a tough game to St. Ignatius 2-1.  But on the final day, a standout performance by Schlee helped the Eagles to a 2-2 tie against Marquette where he made 48 saves on 50 shots.

Coach Gerdano said, "the trip came at a great time for us and we returned a more confident group." That confidence led to the Eagles steamrolling Spalding 5-0 in their first game back in DC. The V2 squad also got a big win this week, beating DeMatha 3-2. Both games were played on Wednesday, January 22.

Both teams are back in action tonight, January 24: the V1 faces DeMatha at 5:30 PM at Laurel Ice Gardens, while the V2 Eagles take on O'Connell at 4:00 PM at Kettler Ice Rink.
