Rugby Beats St. Edward, Classic Up Next
Varsity Rugby secured a strong 28–15 win over St. Edward in a well-rounded team performance on April 18 in Cleveland, Ohio. Gonzaga came out fast, with early tries from Callahan Smith '26 and Eamon Shultz '26 to set the tone. St. Edward responded with resilience, keeping the game close heading into halftime.
In the second half, the Eagles pulled away behind a surge of energy from the reserves. Bo Sulc '26 made an immediate impact, delivering powerful runs and forcing multiple turnovers. One of his efforts led directly to a try from Jordan Strike '27, helping extend Gonzaga’s lead.
Scrum-half Axel Ries '26 controlled the tempo throughout the match, creating several line breaks and adding a try of his own. Defensively, Sean Garayta '26 anchored the line with a series of dominant tackles, while center Cooper Lilly '26 stood out on both sides of the ball, using his explosiveness to threaten offensively and disrupt defensively.
