Water Polo Wins Easterns for Third Time in Program History
Varsity Water Polo defeated Episcopal Academy 10-9 to win Easterns for the first time since 2016, and the third time overall as the team's first title came in 2011. The Eagles finished this year with the best record in program history at 22-4. Gonzaga won three games over two days in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania.
The weekend began against Malvern Prep on Saturday, November 1 in the quarterfinal match. Having defeated the Friars earlier in the year, the Eagles dominated play throughout to win 18-6 and advance to the semifinal. In the semifinal against Germantown Academy, played later that day, Gonzaga jumped out to an early lead and never looked back to earn a 23-14 win to advance to Sunday's championship.
In the championship game, the team faced Episcopal Academy (EA), the host school for this year's tournament. After trailing the Churchmen 7-5 to start the second half, the Eagles clawed back to lead 9-8 going into the final quarter. After EA tied it up 9-9 midway through the fourth quarter, a penalty shot from Thomas Singleton gave Gonzaga the lead with just three minutes left. Furious back and forth play ensued, with the Eagles coming away with a steal with just 36 seconds left on the clock. EA would regain possession with just eight seconds on the clock and hoist one final shot, but goalie Joan Prats '27 made the save to preserve the win and send the Gonzaga faithful in a frenzy as the team secured our first title since 2016 with the 10-9 win. A hat trick from John Stubner '27 was instrumental to the victory.
Over the three games, Thomas Singleton '26 led the way with 15 goals while his brother Jack Singleton '29 scored 10 times. Jack also led the way on defense with 13 steals. Joe Mills '26 and Kasper Parfomak '27 each added 7 goals while John Stubner '27 found the net 6 times. Prats made 20 saves on the weekend and led the team in assists with 7.
Congratulations to Coach Nick Pugliese '08 and the Water Polo team on an amazing season!
