Photography Exhibit "La Resistencia" Opens in Reusch/Cantwell

As part of Gonzaga's Hispanic Heritage Month celebration, an exhibit called "La Resistencia" (which is Spanish for "the resistance") opened this week on campus. Organized by faculty members Ms. Katie Murphy, Mr. Ariel Laguilles, and Mr. Devon Leary, the exhibit features 13 powerful images of Colombian protestors taken by documentary photographer and filmmaker David Lombeida

Taken in the wake of a series of protests in Colombia in April 2021, the portraits show protestors who were victims of anti-riot police. Below each image is a description and QR code that links to a video of each person speaking about his or her experience in the protests.

"The images are powerful and evocative," says Mr. Laguilles. "And in addition to seeing each victim's photograph, you get to hear about their experience in their own words." The videos are in Spanish with English subtitles.

"At Gonzaga, we value diversity and we're really promoting global education -- for our young men to be global citizens," says Ms. Murphy. "With this exhibit, we wanted to engage students in learning about Colombia and current events and to spur their curiosity."

Gonzaga is grateful to David Lombeida for sharing his portraits and videos with our community.
