Gonzaga Model UN Team Wins Best Delegation Award at SHUMUN XX Conference

Last weekend, the Gonzaga Model UN Team competed at the Seton Hall University Model United Nations (SHUMUN) XX Conference in New Jersey. The two-day conference thrusts students into the roles of diplomats, heads of state, and negotiators on important world issues or historical scenarios. Students worked to solve issues like global refugee crises, climate change, and the safety of journalists.

At the conference, the Gonzaga team won one of its biggest accolades yet: The Best Delegation Award. Several Gonzaga students also had exceptional performances in their committees, earning individual awards, including Jack Garland '20, Ben Szalankiewicz '20, Timmy Shaheen '21, Josh Maggiano '21, and Daniel Roginski '19.

“I am immensely proud of the Model UN team, which began as a humble club of about 10 or 15 guys two years ago, and now boasts over 60 active members,” said club moderator and Classics and Social Studies teacher Carl Cordozo. “It's incredibly gratifying to see the guys take ownership of global issues and put in the research to become policy experts in a matter of weeks. If the Gonzaga Model UN team is the future of US foreign policy, the world is in good hands.”
