Anthony Sarro '26 Named D.C. Athlete of the Year by MaxPreps

Anthony Sarro ’26 was named MaxPreps District of Columbia Male Athlete of the Year this week. MaxPreps selects the top male athlete in all 50 states and the District of Columbia each year in June. The athletes are selected either for exceptional all-around success across multiple sports or for achieving national-level distinction in a single sport. Although Gonzaga has had student-athletes win awards from MaxPreps for specific sports, Anthony is the first Eagle to earn the award for multi-sport excellence.

In the fall, Sarro won the DCSAA cross country championship in a time of 15:16.76 which was just shy of the meet record; and he also won both the WCAC and Jesuit titles. During the indoor season, he won the DCSAA titles in both the 1,600 and 3,200 meters and he currently holds the all-time best times in D.C. in the 1,500 meters, 1,600 meters, mile and 3,200 meters. During the outdoor season, he became the first Gonzaga runner to break the 9:00 minute mark in the 3,200 meters with an 8:57.28 finish at Arcadia. To finish his career, he won WCAC titles in both the 1,600 meter (in a meet and school record 4:07.28) and the 3,200 meter races to earn the WCAC Meet MVP Award. Over the three seasons of his senior year, he set eight school records.

On top of all of his achievements in competition, Sarro was one of three graduates to tie for Valedictorian honors and to speak at Gonzaga’s commencement exercises. In his speech, he touched on his journey as a runner. After a rough junior season, he said that he took a step back and realized what he truly loved about his sport: spending time with his teammates. That realization and renewed love for the journey led to a standout senior year, both in competition and in the classroom. He closed his remarks by encouraging his classmates to "see that God is present not only in the headliners, but in every ordinary moment.”

Congratulations Anthony - job well done!
