Charter Day Celebrates Excellence at Gonzaga

On Friday, May 1st, Gonzaga students, faculty and staff gathered in St. Aloysius Church for the Charter Day assembly, a time-honored annual tradition that celebrates notable achievements of Gonzaga’s community members.

Students from all grades were recognized for their achievements in academics, service, athletics, arts and more, including The Barnes Award, which is presented to students whose honor, humility, reliability and deportment set them apart. Faculty and staff were celebrated for milestone anniversaries, and Mr. Andrew Turner was honored with the Herlihy Award, which is presented to a faculty or staff member who embodies the qualities of excellence as a Jesuit educator.

Fr. Lingan presented The President’s Eagle Award to two longtime, outstanding staff members for their dedication and service to Gonzaga. Marta Zamorano has worked at Gonzaga since 2014 and supervises a dedicated staff that keeps campus clean and beautiful. Fr. Lingan praised Marta by saying, “She is ever present, and ever pleasant… She is dedicated, generous, gracious, and an exceptionally hard worker.” Benny McCrimmon (P ’09) - known to all as Officer Mac - has served Gonzaga since 2004 and shows a genuine concern and care for the safety and wellbeing of everyone on our campus. Fr. Lingan thanked him for maintaining “a calm and even disposition,” and for being “never intrusive, yet always aware.”

The Herlihy Award has been given to a faculty or staff member annually since 1971, and is determined by a vote of the faculty. The recipient embodies the qualities of excellence as a Jesuit educator, as well as loyalty, devotion, and a spirit of service. This year, Religion teacher Mr. Andrew Turner, who is retiring at the end of the school year, was honored with this prestigious award.

Thirty-five members of the faculty and staff were recognized for milestone anniversaries of service to Gonzaga, beginning with five years, and culminating in 30 years for Religion teacher Mrs. Carol Corgan.

The musical talents of the Chamber Choir and Symphonic Band made the day even more meaningful for all. We hope you enjoy this photo album - congratulations to this year’s honorees!
