Crew - Varsity
2019 - 2020
Head Coach: Andy Bacas
Since its founding in 1995, Gonzaga Crew has steadily grown—introducing more and more young men to the sport while becoming increasingly competitive on the water. Over the past decade, Gonzaga has risen to become one of the top scholastic boys’ rowing programs in the country.
Spring 2022 will mark Head Coach Andy Bacas' fifth season leading Gonzaga Rowing. He is a two-time Washington Post All-Met Coach of the Year.
In 2019, our last full season, Gonzaga for the first time earned three medals at the Scholastic Rowing Association of America National Championship Regatta. In the pandemic shortened 2021 season, the Eagle Varsity Eight took silver at SRAA Nationals, their best 1v8 finish since 2015.
Over the summer of 2021, Ryan Link '21 became the first Gonzaga oarsman ever to win a U19 World Championship, rowing in the gold medal winning USA Eight at the Junior World Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. Link was later named US U19 Male Athlete of the year by USRowing, also a first for a Gonzaga rowing athlete.
With over 75 boys on the roster (Varsity & Freshman), the team fields boats at all levels. And while most of our athletes are new to the sport of rowing when they start at Gonzaga, many eventually go on to row in college.
