News of Alumni: Duante Abercrombie '03

Hockey coach Duante Abercrombie ‘03 was recently featured on WTOP News about how the Washington Capitals hockey team is working to break down racial barriers.

As a member of the Washington Capitals’ recently formed Capitals Black Hockey Committee, Abercrombie is working to address racism in hockey and grow the game in underserved communities.

Hockey changed Abercrombie’s life when, at the age of six, he gave the sport a try in the Fort Dupont program, run by legendary coach Neil Henderson. He is now passionate about changing the narrative that hockey is a "white man's sport" and making sure that Black people feel welcomed in the hockey world.

"My goal is to try to just help educate and create as much access to the game for people that look like me," said Abercrombie in the WTOP article. "I definitely think it’s getting better. There are more Black and female players in the game currently than there have ever been, especially in the Washington, D.C., area. That means the Capitals have done a good job of infiltrating space and spreading the love of the game to not only the traditional hockey market but to the urban community as well.”
