Mr. Duffy's Sculpture Installed in Arkansas

In 2019, the city of Bentonville, Arkansas commissioned a piece of art to set in the center of a roundabout in town. Gonzaga Art Teacher Matt Duffy submitted a design for consideration and after a nationwide search, his sculpture entitled “Open Heart” was chosen.

Mr. Duffy worked on the installation in partnership with the Bentonville Schools and a group called Choose Love, which was started by the mother of a child who was killed at Sandy Hook. He says that when people look at the sculpture--which takes the form of a large heart made out of metal--he hopes they notice and think about the play between the hard, industrial material and the soft sentiment. "Even though we often see things like love and caring as a soft sentiment," Mr. Duffy says, "it's possible that in reality it takes a lot of strength, it takes a lot of power."

Check out the great video below about the installation. Congratulations Mr. Duffy!
