Alumnus Stephen Grant '77 Visits Gonzaga
Last June, Gonzaga alumnus Stephen Grant ’77 wrote an
essay for
America Magazine about his month-long experience at
Mepkin Abbey, a Trappist monastery in South Carolina that offers a unique monastic guest program.
On January 13, Stephen visited Gonzaga to speak to current students and faculty about his experience
living in silence and detaching from work and family life. He emphasized that Gonzaga students should take personal responsibility after they graduate for their continued spiritual growth. He recommended that everyone consider participating in a silent retreat at some point, telling students his experience inspired not only him, but readers as well. One person even sent him a note saying his essay inspired him to begin the vocation. “I never thought that my experience would lead to someone taking up the vocation,” he said.
Thank you for coming back to Eye Street, Stephen!
