Chris Sumner ’02 Joins Gonzaga Faculty

Gonzaga is thrilled to welcome Chris Sumner ’02 to our faculty as a math teacher. A native of Silver Spring, Chris graduated from Gonzaga in 2002 and went on to Mount St. Mary’s University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and played basketball.

After college graduation, he moved to Cyprus to work with PeacePlayers International, a non-profit organization founded by fellow Gonzaga alumni Sean and Brendan Tuohey. Its mission is to use basketball to bring kids together in conflict and post-conflict countries.

Over the next few years, Chris worked in youth athletics in over 15 countries, with stints as a professional basketball player in three European and Asian countries, before returning to the United States to pursue a graduate degree. In 2013, he graduated with a master's degree from Georgetown University in Sports Industry Management with a focus on business, management, and operations. Most recently, he spent four years in Hong Kong working for NBA Asia and assisted the Ministries of Education in Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam in developing their basketball and educational curricula.

"I'm very excited to be back on Eye Street,” he says. “Gonzaga taught me so many things that shaped me into the professional I am today, and I hope to give new generations of Eagles that same guidance."
