NHS Holds Record-Breaking Canned Food Drive!

Every year, Gonzaga’s National Honor Society organizes a week-long Canned Food Drive to benefit the McKenna Center. The drive takes the form of a competition between homerooms, with each homeroom vying to see which one can earn the most points per student (three points are given for soups and jellies, two points for beans and fruit, and one point for all other items).

Before the 2017 drive, the record for the most number of cans ever collected during the event was 9,300. But this year, the NHS set an ambitious goal of collecting 12,000 cans and achieving 85 percent student participation. To add extra incentive, Headmaster Mr. Tom Every agreed that if the Gonzaga community accomplished those two goals, there would be no school on the day after the Super Bowl.

On Monday, November 6, NHS Faculty Moderator Mr. Paul Hamm announced on WZAG that we had smashed our goal, achieving 87.2 percent student participation and collecting 20,868 cans!

Mr. Patrick Sullivan's homeroom collected the most cans (1,574) while Mr. Allan L'Etoile’s homeroom won the overall competition for the most points per student. Said Mr. Hamm: “Ten homerooms passed the 700 can mark and three homerooms even broke 1,000 cans!”
