On a beautiful fall day in front of over 3,000 fans, varsity football took on St. John's in the 103rd contest in the rivalry. With both teams having beaten Bishop McNamara and suffered defeats to Good Counsel and DeMatha earlier in the season, the outcome of the game would determine seeding in the annual four team playoff for the 2023 WCAC Championship. The Eagles fought back valiantly after being down for the first three quarters, but fell in overtime 23-20.
Before the game, Gonzaga President Father Joe Lingan, SJ '75 presented the Reyda family with gifts of appreciation during a tribute ceremony honoring the late long-time Athletic Director Joe Reyda '85. You can see the gameday program here
St. John's jumped out to a two touchdown lead, and seemed to be in control heading into the fourth quarter with the score sitting at 14-0 Cadets. The Eagles, however, showed immediate signs of life to start the final frame as senior captain Aidan Conrath connected with Lincoln Fisher '25 on a deep pass to get the ball inside the 10 yard line. Three plays later, Conrath threw a beautiful pass to senior captain DD Holmes for a four yard touchdown. Kicker John Holley '25 connected on the extra point to make it 14-7.
After getting the ball back, Conrath and Fisher connected again - this time for a 48 yard touchdown to electrify the crowd with just under five minutes remaining in the game. Holley's extra point was no good, however. And on the ensuing kickoff, the Cadets returned it for a back breaking 85 yard score to make it 20-13. St. John's decided to go for a two point conversion attempt, but the Gonzaga defense made a strong stop to keep the game within reach.
Gonzaga's offense drove for a third time in the quarter resulting in a 67 yard drive that was capped off with a 4 yard touchdown pass to Sam Terry, Jr. '25. Holley's kick was good this time knotting the score at 20-20 with two minutes left, and that's how the 4th quarter would conclude.
In overtime, Gonzaga failed to move the ball and came up with no points. The Eagles defense then held the St. John's offense, only giving up three yards. On 4th down, the Cadet field goal team came on and made a 40 yard attempt to end the game.
With the loss, Gonzaga is the number four seed in the playoff and will face number one seed Good Counsel at 7pm on Friday, November 10 in Olney, MD. You can purchase tickets here
