Mr. Paul Buckley '86 and Mr. Bob Barry Honored as Teachers of the Year

Congratulations to Math Teacher Mr. Paul Buckley '86 and Science Teacher Mr. Bob Barry who were selected by their peers as Gonzaga’s Veteran Teacher of the Year and Novice Teacher of the Year, respectively. The awards recognize teachers from each Catholic high school in the Archdiocese of Washington who “embrace teaching as a ministry, proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and demonstrate respect for the Catholic identity and the charism of his/her school.” They will be recognized next Friday at the annual Professional Development Day organized by the High School Principals Association of the Archdiocese of Washington.

Below are citations recognizing Mr. Buckley and Mr. Barry and celebrating their accomplishments and commitment to Catholic education. Congratulations to both!

Paul Buckley, Gonzaga Class of 1986, has been working at Gonzaga since 1998, after having taught at Elizabeth Seton High School for four years. His contributions to our school are numerous and impactful. Paul is the current chair of the Math Department. In 2001 he started the AP Statistics course at Gonzaga - he has served as an AP Reader for AP Statistics for 15 years, and is currently an AP Consultant for both AP Statistics and AP PreCalculus. At Gonzaga, Paul spent the past 25 years as the Producer and Moderator for the Gonzaga Dramatic Association, the group he performed with as a student in the 80s. In addition to his work in the GDA, he has served on the Academic Council, Headmasters Advisory Committee, and as Chairman of the Gonzaga Performing Arts Hall of Fame. Paul was inducted into Gonzaga's Performing Arts Hall of Fame in 2016. He has also coached baseball, softball, golf and tennis, served as a retreat and service trip leader, and provides the occasional music at school and alumni masses. He is the current co-moderator of the Gonzaga Sports Broadcasting Club. Paul is the husband to Monica Buckley, a former Gonzaga arts teacher, and the very proud father of Anthony (Gonzaga Class of 2023), Caroline (Visitation Class of 2026) and Gabriel (a hopeful member of the Gonzaga Class of 2028).

A DMV native, Bob Barry arrived at Gonzaga in the fall of 2021 as a Science teacher. Since then, he has become an integral member of our community in myriad ways. Bob has taught Honors Physics, Physics, and Biology. He is an Assistant Coach for Freshman Football working with the Offensive and Defensive Lines and supervising team study halls. He takes an active role in ministry at Gonzaga as well, serving as an adult leader on the Kairos retreat and our service immersion trip to Emmitsburg, MD. Bob has immersed himself in the mission of our school at all levels and is an excellent example for novice and veteran teachers alike. We are grateful to God that he found his way to Eye Street!
