Soccer Finds Its Stride, Wins Three in a Row

The Varsity Soccer Eagles are 5-5-5 overall, but since dropping their first of two games at the Jesuit Soccer Classic in Wisconsin back on September 27, the team's defense has stepped up, leading to some big wins. On September 28, the team tied Marquette High Schoo, the host school at the Jesuit Soccer Classic, and the number 4 ranked team in the nation, 0-0. On October 1, a tough St. Mary's Ryken team earned a draw with the Eagles, 0-0.

The next day, Ocotber 2, the offense began to find its timing resulting a 3-0 win over DC International. And on October 4, in by far the biggest game of the season at WCAC rival and defending champion The Heights, the Eagles notched a 1-0 win in exciting fashion on the road. In a very tight match Gonzaga was limited in their shots but with five minutes remaining, Senior Ryan Elie threw the ball in to a running Mark Western ‘20 who went right to goal and slotted it in. Pandemonium ensued. Freshman goalkeeper Drew Hartman also recorded his fourth shutout of the season.

The team was back in action on October 8 against another WCAC opponent, Paul VI. Four seniors including birthday celebrant Ian Granthon ‘20 scored goals for the Eagles while the back line helped secure Hartman's fifth shutout in a row. The team takes on DC rival Washington International School tonight at 7 PM under the lights on Buchanan Field.
