Gonzaga Poets and Writers In Action

On Wednesday, May 3 ,fourteen students in the Gonzaga Poets and Writers Club spent a day of poetry and friendship with 25 students and their teachers from the Bishop Walker School, a tuition-free middle school for boys in D.C.

Everyone wrote two poems, one describing the kind of person they want to be and one on a Kadir Nelson painting. "Some wrote about difficult and complicated topics and everyone shared a ton of joy too," says English Teacher Mr. Joe Ross. "Our students were mentors, learners, poets, and big brothers, all in one day."

In addition, this past weekend, two senior poets read their work at local poetry events. On Friday night, April 28, Markeith Hogan '23 read several of his poems at the Cultural Arts Showcase at the Harriet Tubman Center in Columbia, Maryland. The following day at the Parkmont Poetry Festival, Hector Reyes '23 read his winning poem, "Ode to Immigrants." He also read another winning poem by classmate Michael McKnight '23, who was unable to attend the festival.

Congratulations to all of these poets -- for both your excellent poetry as well as your work mentoring and encouraging younger students! We hope you enjoy these nice photos from the past week.
