Caleb Williams '21 Emerges as Heisman Front-runner
Caleb Williams '21 has had an incredible year on the football field. In January, Williams transferred from Oklahoma University to the University of Southern California to reunite with head coach Lincoln Riley who made the same transition last December. After Williams's move, many other student-athletes from around the country followed with the hopes of bringing the Trojans back to the top of college football. The team has not won a Pac-12 Championship since 2008; and in 2021, it had its worst season since 2000 finishing 4-8. USC is currently 11-1 and tonight, December 2, will face Utah in the Pac-12 Championship game at 8pm on Fox. Utah is the only team to beat USC this year, as the Utes narrowly defeated the Trojans 43-42 on October 15.
USC's play this season has brought back memories of success on the field that has not been seen since the early 2000s -- during what is now known as the "Pete Carroll Era." From the fall of 2000 until the fall of 2009, Pete Carroll (current head coach of the NFL's Seattle Seahawks) led the team to seven Pac-12 Championships, six bowl game wins and back-to-back National Championships in 2003 and 2004. The Heisman Trophy is awarded annually to the most outstanding player in college football, and two Trojan quarterbacks took home the award under Carroll: Carson Palmer in 2002 and Matt Leinart in 2004.
Last weekend, Caleb "did it all in the Trojans’ win over Notre Dame...seizing control of the Heisman Trophy race and putting his team on the brink of the CFP [college football playoff]," wrote Sports Illustrated. Here are highlights from the win and a few moments from the postgame interviews:
