Baseball Wins WCAC Championship!

On Sunday, May 15th, Gonzaga Baseball played in a decisive win-or-go-home Game Three for the WCAC Championship vs St. John's. The Eagles dropped Game One of the series on Friday, but forced Game Three by defeating the Cadets on Saturday. All three games were played at the Nationals Youth Academy.

Gonzaga took an early 1-0 lead from a solo shot homerun by Ethan Van Sice '23. In the bottom of the second, the team found itself in a jam with the game tied 1-1. Head Coach Chad Carroll brought in William Shean '23 in relief. Shean inherited a 1-0 count, bases loaded, and two outs, but was able to get the crucial out to retire the side.

Offensively, in the top of the third, the flood gates opened for the Eagles. Seven consecutive singles would give them a 6-1 lead. Gonzaga never looked back.

Henry Hultquist '22 went on to pitch five scoreless innings and close out the game. The final out of the game was ground out to shortstop Jake Gupton '23 who made the routine play at first to earn Gonzaga its first WCAC Championship in over 20 years. Check out the final out here:

Nicholas Morabito '22 told the Washington Post: "This win isn’t just for this team. It’s for all the teams. It’s for the past teams. It’s for the teams that couldn’t do it." To Read the full Washington Post article click here.

"Gonzaga winning the baseball championship for the first time in 22 years is a great accomplishment.  I am so proud of Coach Carroll and these players for providing us some great entertainment this spring," said Athletic Director Joe Reyda '85.  "I am very happy and thankful for this senior class who has gone through so much the past two years. Gonzaga Baseball has made the Gonzaga community and alumni very happy.  Job well done boys."
