Alumnus Thomas J. Egan ‘49 Passes Away

It is with deep sadness that Gonzaga shares the news of the death of one of its preeminent Board members and alumni leaders, Thomas J. Egan, of the Class of 1949. An attorney of several decades with the firm of Stohlman, Beuchert Egan and Smith, joined the Gonzaga Board in the 1990’s. His legal and business acumen were a great benefit to Gonzaga Presidents Father Bernard Dooley, S.J. and Father Allen Novotny, S.J. during an era of significant rebirth for the school.

In addition to his personal generosity, Tom encouraged local philanthropists to invest in Gonzaga. His advocacy on behalf of his alma mater were directly responsible for the creation of the school’s Choral Arts Program and the construction of a facility for the study and instruction of music, now called the Christopher Flannery
Music Center.

Tom Egan was particularly devoted to his Class of 1949 classmates. Through his initiative and joined by other class leaders, the Class of 1949 Endowed Scholarship was established in 1989. The Class of 1949 Endowed Scholarship is the most generously supported class scholarship at Gonzaga. After serving three, three-year terms on the Gonzaga Board of Directors, Tom remained active with the President’s Council and with the Class of 1949 activities. In addition, he was the proud grandfather of Gonzaga alumnus, Thomas Katula -- Class of 2017. The Gonzaga community is forever grateful for the devotion, guidance, and generosity given by Tom Egan, Class of 1949.

The Mass of Christian Burial will take place at Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament on Saturday, Jan 22 at 11:00AM. The visitation will take place at 10:00AM. Please click here to read the full obituary, including more details about funeral arrangements.
