Football Defeats Avalon, Set to Face DeMatha

Under Friday night Buchanan Field lights, the varsity football Eagles defeated Avalon to kickoff Homecoming weekend on October 1. The Eagles led 42-14 midway through the third quarter, and would win 49-34 to improve to 4-2 on the season.

The Black Knights scored first to go up 6-0 early in the first quarter. On the ensuing drive, the Gonzaga offense marched 61 yards in 9 plays to take a 7-6 lead behind senior running back Joseph Hammond, Jr.'s three-yard touchdown run. The Eagles would not trail again for the rest of the game. Behind a strong performance by the offensive line led by senior center JD Francone, Hammond would score three more times on the night with runs of 7, 24, and 2 respectively. Through the air, the Eagles connected on touchdown passes of 25 and 11 yards -- both to junior wide receiver Jalen McDonald.

The defense was led by junior safety Deuce Lee. Senior captain and linebacker Kadari Machen forced a fumble while senior defensive end Jordan Shuler and defensive back Gavin Bryson both made key fumble recoveries. Senior wide receiver Alec Easter led the special teams effort with a blocked punt.

The Eagles are back in action to open up WCAC play on the road against DeMatha on Friday, October 8 at 7 PM. Click here for game and livestream details.
