Football Opens 133rd Season with Dominant Performance

After weather delayed the start of the 133rd season of football on Eye St for one day, the varsity Eagles defeated Friendship Collegiate 37-0 on Saturday, August 28 on Buchanan Field - the first game played on Eye Street since October 2019.

The Eagles came out strong to take a 10-0 lead thanks to a touchdown pass from quarterback Carson Petitbon '23 to fullback Brogan O'Leary '22 and a 42 yard field goal from kicker James Miller '22. In the second quarter, after a fumble recovery from defensive back Trey Engram '23 deep in their own territory, Gonzaga drove 87 yards to take a 16-0 lead on a 5 yard touchdown run by runningback Joseph Hammond, Jr. '22. The Eagles would score one more time before halftime on a touchdown catch by wide receiver Jalen McDonald '23 to make it 23-0 at the half.

The second half saw Hammond, Jr. find the endzone again in the third quarter and sophomore runningback Cody Hobson finish the scoring in the fourth quarter with a 15 yard touchdown scamper. Defensively, the Eagles were led by senior linebacker (captain) Kadari Machen and senior defensive back Patrick McMahon.

The Gonzaga student section was back in full force, and after missing a season of true Gonzaga in-person spirit and atmosphere, Coach Trivers asked for a second rendition of the Alma Mater! Watch below:
