2020-2021 Sports Recaps: Fall

Over the course of the summer, we are taking a look back and sharing highlights from our 2020-2021 shortened sports seasons.  With high hopes for a return to regular athletics in the fall, we would like to celebrate and reflect back on the hard work of all our student-athletes and coaches last year. Next up are the fall sports, which were played from February 15 to April 17 last school year. Each recap below has been provided by our Gonzaga head coaches.

From Head Cross Country Coach John Ausema:
The 2020-2021 season for Gonzaga Cross Country was highlighted by Patrick Donnelly's 14:54 at the Running Lane Championships in Alabama last November -- the fastest XC 5000 time ever recorded by a Gonzaga runner. You can see complete results from the meet here.

From Head Football Coach Randy Trivers:
Gonzaga Football proved to be an "Unbreakable Team" as they completed an "Unimaginable Dream" during the 2020-2021 school year. After months of meeting and training virtually, staying together while apart, and practicing in various locations while adhering to numerous health restrictions without fail, the Eagles took the field versus DeMatha exactly one year after Covid-19 closed school March 13, 2020.  Determined to make the most of every opportunity to grow as individuals and as a team (with no guarantee that the scheduled games during the Spring window of competition would even be played) every player, parent, and coach in the program embraced the challenges leading up to that day and throughout what turned out to be a five game season to remember from March 13, 2021 to April 15, 2021. All practices and four of the five games took place at the St. James Academy in Springfield, VA.

The Eagles finished 5-0 by defeating DeMatha, Good Counsel, St. Mary's Ryken, Avalon, and St. John's. The program also competed in four developmental games during the spring, going 3-1 in those games. 19 Class of 2021 Eagles were honored before the 99th Game versus St. John's on April 15. Senior linebacker Trey Jamison (Navy) was named Gatorade DC Player of the Year and DC Touchdown Club Player of the Year. Senior defensive back Kye Holmes (James Madison) was honored as the Maus Collins MVP at the banquet celebration on May 16 as voted by his teammates. From Head Soccer Coach Scott Waller:
2021 Gonzaga Soccer was anything but normal. Due to stringent DC Health and Safety Protocols, the soccer team could not practice or train as a team. In order to have the ninety-plus students interested in playing soccer, the coaching staff created a sign-up rotation where any Gonzaga student could sign up for a game. Basically, combining all three teams (Varsity, Junior Varsity, and Freshman) into one team for that day. Each game had different personnel and a new set of coaches. Many games had two-year varsity starters playing with students that had never played for Gonzaga.

The Soccer team played 11 away matches. The goal of each match was simple: wear purple, represent Gonzaga, meet new players, and have fun. The Soccer Program exceeded all expectations. The list of senior leaders for Gonzaga this unique season were: Jack Ries, Luke Maloney, Gianluca Sacco, Spencer Cowley, Patrick Connolly, Will Thompson, Jack Glavy, Jack Wood, James Owczarski, Thomas Dubois, Matthew Johnson, Zach Merkle, Gabe Svenburg.
