2020-2021 Sports Recaps: Winter

Over the course of the summer, we are taking a look back and sharing highlights from our 2020-2021 shortened sports seasons.  With high hopes for a return to regular athletics in the fall, we would like to celebrate and reflect back on the hard work of all our student-athletes and coaches last year. First up are the winter sports, which were played from December 8 to February 15 last school year. Each recap below has been provided by our Gonzaga head coaches.

From Head Basketball Coach Steve Turner:
The 2020-2021 season was a season like no other on Eye Street! With everything that was going on in the world the Eagles were able to place two Varsity teams in the St. James winter league in Alexandria, VA. The unique situation allowed for more young men to have a Varsity Basketball experience during the 2020-2021 school year. Both teams played a 10 game season and were able to compete against a wide group of teams from different conferences around the DMV. It was a blessing to be able to have our kids compete this year, especially our seniors! Those seniors included Malcolm Dread and Will Scherer who will be attending Richmond and Amherst respectively.

This summer has brought on a little more of a normalcy and the teams at all levels are competing and enjoying being back together. On Thursday, July 1st Gonzaga brought home two summer league championships. The Varsity won the High Level Summer League defeating National Christian Academy and the freshman team won the JV summer league at McNamara knocking off Paul VI! With all that is happening it should be fun this winter with the teams as they get back to league play in the WCAC on Eye Street!

From Head Swimming and Diving Coach Kevin Wagman:
Gonzaga Swim and Dive had an abbreviated 2020-2021 season due to the restrictions on athletic activities. They were not allowed to hold water workouts as a team indoors or outdoors, but this did not stop the spirited boys from coming together to support each other. Determined to still maintain some of the spirit and energy from their dominant 2019-2020 season, the boys turned to online platforms. From the start of the calendar season in early November we hosted online swimming specific workouts. Even with the already demanding online schedules of the student athletes, those that could make it joined in for some additional exercise and team building.

While the national health crisis made it seem like no winter sports would be able to compete, things changed enough by late January that Gonzaga was able to attend three swim meets. This was a pivotal moment for the season and allowed the freshmen to meet their upperclassmen and captains. While the meet environment was not as competitive as the previous season's full meet schedule, the opportunity to race was a much-needed boost in team morale.

With only a taste of competitive swimming last season the Gonzaga Swim and Dive team and its new captains are set to have another dominant season this year. Stay tuned and follow our boys this winter as they work to defend all four of their championship titles.
