Gonzaga Celebrates Women's History Month

Gonzaga held its first-ever Women's History Month Assembly on Wednesday, March 24. The virtual event featured guest speaker Mrs. Sonia Aranza (P '17), an expert on workplace diversity and inclusion.

The assembly began with a welcome by Director of Diversity Mr. Devon Leary and a prayer read by Assistant Director of Campus Ministry Ms. Danielle Flood. Religion Teacher Ms. Shannon Berry and Manager of Advancement Systems and Information Mrs. Lashieta Rogers both read original poems.

Science teacher Ms. Katie Garbart introduced Mrs. Aranza. A former Gonzaga parent who was born in the Philippines and raised in Hawaii, Mrs. Aranza spoke about how diversity and inclusion help us to succeed. "Think of diversity as a treasure chest with a lock on it," she said. "Inclusion is the key to unlocking the treasure chest." She went on to discuss topics such as the importance of acknowledging the different lived experiences of those you meet, confronting and understanding unconscious bias, and how to be an effective ally.

Thank you Mrs. Aranza for sharing your experiences and knowledge with us!
