Poets and Writers and Campus Ministry Host "Slam Racism" Event

More than 50 Gonzaga students and teachers gathered on Zoom this week for a poetry reading and discussion about racial justice called Slam Racism.

The event, which was jointly hosted by the Gonzaga Poets and Writers Club and Campus Ministry, featured 12 students and three teachers reading poems. A  thoughtful and challenging discussion followed, in which students responded to the poems and discussed the events of this past summer, including the murder of George Floyd and the marches against police brutality and for racial justice that have followed. Students discussed how the poems made them feel,  and what they might do to build a better world.  Click the play button below to watch excerpts from the event:

"This was an important Gonzaga moment in which art touched activism and, we hope, moved us to work toward a more just world," Mr. Joseph Ross said. "Our poets see a terrible injustice and they use their art, poetry, to speak about it and to challenge us all to change. This is precisely the power the arts can offer us in a difficult time."
