Senior Tre McGuire Named Recipient of the 2020 Kevin A. Nelson, II Creative Writing Award

Tre McGuire ’20 was recently awarded the 2020 Kevin A. Nelson, II Creative Writing Award by Archbishop Carroll High School. Tre is one of only two Gonzaga students to win this award since its inception 15 years ago and will receive a cash prize for his achievement.

The award was established in 2005 and is named for Kevin A. Nelson, II, an avid poet and writer and a 2003 Archbishop Carroll graduate who also attended Gonzaga for his first two years of high school. After high school, Kevin went to Xavier University in New Orleans for one year and passed away in Maryland in 2004.

"Tre shares something very important with Kevin A. Nelson, II, for whom this award is named: a passion for writing about real moments in their lives, moments made up of both joy and sadness,” said Gonzaga English Teacher Joseph Ross, who also taught at Archbishop Carroll for ten years before coming to Gonzaga. “Tre, like Kevin before him, turns to writing to process and explore the realities of his own life. In this, Tre McGuire is a perfect recipient for the 2020 Kevin A. Nelson, II Creative Writing Award."

Congratulations, Tre!
