Alumni Service Corps Shifts Its Focus During Pandemic

Normally, the members of Gonzaga’s Alumni Service Corps (ASC) spend their days substituting in classes, monitoring lunches, supporting the Library and Campus Ministry, and coaching. However, given the closure of campus and Gonzaga’s shift to distance learning, two members of the ASC--Josue Amaya ‘15 and Griffin Morche ’15—have reimagined their service to the Gonzaga community.

For the last seven weeks, they have filled the gap left by Gonzaga students who are no longer able to be on Eye Street by volunteering for two vital service programs: the McKenna Center Pantry and Campus Kitchen. In addition to helping to run the food pantry (which is now set up outside) they are supporting Ms. Patty Tobin and Campus Kitchen by delivering meals and visiting residents at Golden Rule, a housing complex on Capitol Avenue. They have also reached out to several of their Gonzaga classmates who have responded by volunteering for both projects as well.

“Knowing that, just down the street from our house, there were people who we had become close with, who faced increasing hardships in these dire circumstances, motivated us to continue helping the community in any way we can,” says Griffin. “The folks and families have been nothing but exceptionally grateful for our continued efforts. For us, that’s all that counts.
