Gonzaga Library Hosts Virtual Poetry Slam to Celebrate National Poetry Month

On April 22, 50 students, faculty, and staff members attended a virtual poetry slam on Zoom to celebrate National Poetry Month.

Twenty-six students and teachers presented both original and favorite poems. In addition, the event featured a special guest presenter, Dr. Lori Shpunt, a retired professor from Trinity Washington University and author of a number of poetry books.

Faculty presenters included Mr. Rick Cannon, English teacher and poet who is fondly referred to as the Gonzaga Library’s Poet in Residence; Mr. Joe Ross, English teacher, poet, and moderator of the Gonzaga Poets and Writers Club, who read from his newest poetry book, Raising King, due out this September; and Mrs. Lashieta Rogers, Manager of Advancement Systems & Information.

"This is our favorite event of the year, and we wanted to make sure this year was just as special as it always is," said Librarian Pam Valeiras. "We are grateful for everyone who joined us and shared poetry together. We belong to such an amazing community.”

We hope you enjoy this video, which includes four student poems from the event:
