Wrestling Beats Good Counsel and Ireton

The Wrestling Eagles defeated Ireton 59-15 and Good Counsel 33-30 on January 15. It’s been over 10 years since the Eagles have beat Good Counsel on the mat. The Eye Street Grapplers were led by strong performances from Sean Schaefer ‘21 and Kadari Machen ‘22 who both finished the day 2-0 with three pins and one major decision between the two of them. Here are two of the pins:

In the win over Good Counsel, the Eagles were leading 33-27 with only one match left: GC's Roberts (#7 ranked Heavyweight by the National Prep Wrestling Organization) vs Gonzaga's JD Francone ‘22. Francone never backed down, and at one point had Roberts on his back threatening to pin. Although Francone could not take the win, he did take Roberts (whose career record is now 33-0) the distance; and by doing so, JD effectively secured the win for the Eagles.

“Roberts has pinned many of his opponents this season and needed to pin Francone for Good Counsel to take the dual victory," says Coach Yates. "Francone wrestled to win the match and wasn’t intimidated by his opponent’s resume; he let it be known that he and Gonzaga are contenders in the WCAC. We are so proud of the boys."

Next up for the team is a Quad vs Landon, Gilman, and Episcopal at Landon on January 17 at 4pm.

Go Gonzaga!
