Jesuit Community Welcomes New Rector

Over Christmas break, the Gonzaga Jesuit Community was thrilled to welcome Father Harry Geib, SJ as its new rector.

 

Originally from the Philadelphia area, Fr. Harry attended St. Joseph’s University, where he first met the Jesuits. Before entering the Jesuits, Fr. Harry pursued graduate studies in gerontology at Duke University. As a Jesuit, he did his regency here at Gonzaga from 1985 to 1987 teaching biology and chemistry. Later he worked with the Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) in Thailand (teaching English as a Second Language to Cambodian and Hmong refugees), in Malaysia (overseeing the elementary school for the Vietnamese Boat refugees), and in Uganda (serving the pastoral needs of the Catholic refugees from the Sudan).

 

Following his refugee work, he returned to the United States and earned a Master's in Social Work at Gallaudet University and then worked as the health care coordinator for the Maryland Province Jesuits and directed the Province’s skilled health care facility in Philadelphia. Fr. Harry then worked in campus ministry at Wheeling Jesuit University in West Virginia, coordinating retreats and prayer groups for students, as well as living in a residence hall as a Jesuit chaplain. For the past six years he served as superior of the Colombiere Jesuit Community in Baltimore.

 

“I am excited to be back with the Jesuit Community in Washington, D.C. and I am looking forward to my involvement at Gonzaga College High School, the McKenna Center, and other ministries of the Washington D.C. area Jesuits,” says Fr. Harry. “I very much enjoyed my two years teaching the Classes of 1988 and 1989. I truly bleed PURPLE!”
