Wrestling Completes First International Training Tour, Ready for Midday Melee

On Thursday, December 26 the Varsity Wrestling Eagles travelled to Barcelona, Spain for the program's first ever international training tour. Thirteen student-athletes and two coaches made the trip.

In addition to training three days with members the Spanish National Team, the Eye Street Grapplers traveled to Manresa where they had the opportunity to see the Caves of St. Ignatius,
the Chapel of the Rapture, the Well of the Hen, and the Basilica of Santa Maria ‘La Seu.
After a visit to the beautiful Montserrat Monastery just outside of Barcelona, members of the team walked a few miles of the Ignatian Way, the 408 Mile trek St. Ignatius took into Manresa, Spain where he wrote the Spiritual Exercises.

While in Barcelona, the Eagles visited:
  • Sacred Heart Church, where St. Ignatius’s Sword was on display
  • St. Ignatius Street, where he lived and studied Latin
  • Church of Santa Maria del Mar (built in the XII century), where St Ignatius prayed and begged
  • Barcelona Cathedral, where St Ignatius prayed in the crypt of Santa Eulalia
  • Sagrada Familia - one of the Modern Wonders of the World - a 100 Year construction project due to be complete in 2022/23
Head Coach Milton Yates '97 said, "the team had an amazing bonding experience while abroad and it is the hope that the student-athletes were able to make an unforgettable connection between their spirituality and their sport."

The Eagles are back in the US and are preparing for the much anticipated Midday Melee. The team will host DeMatha and O'Connell in a tri-meet on Wednesday, January 8 at 2 PM in the Carmody Center.
