Football Serves on Bye Week, Ready for St. John's

Ever since Head Coach Randy Trivers took over the reins of the Gonzaga Football program five years ago, the team has used its bye week to perform service. The Varsity team is divided into eight squads, which the team calls “Scholar Ballers.” Each squad is led by a senior and includes a mix of student-athletes from different years and different positions. The squads work to support each other academically, socially, and athletically while engaging in healthy competition with the other groups throughout the season.

Last week, during the football program’s academic study period after school, the squads made visits to Children's Hospital, Unique Residential Care, Washington Jesuit Academy, the Father McKenna Center, and St. John Baptist Church. "Our objective was to extend our hearts and hands to others who could benefit from our service,” says Coach Trivers. “We hope that the experiences have inspired our young men to continue to keep service at the forefront of their personal journeys as growing Men for Others."

Carol Ballena, the coordinator of volunteers at Children’s Hospital, said the Gonzaga students helped make Halloween special for patients. “I enjoyed the energy your team brought to the hospital and their willingness to help out in any way,” she said. “A special shout out to those who dressed up too, their costumes were amazing!”
